The Experience
You're picked up at your Moshi hotel around 8 a.m. on day one and driven to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western side, where the climb begins at 2,360 meters. The first day is a gentle introduction—a hike through the Lemosho glades and forest to Big Tree Camp at 2,780 meters. From there, the route circles the mountain to the south, passing through rainforest home to the region's unique wildlife, then opens onto the moorland of the Shira Plateau. By day three you're at 3,850 meters, and the guides take you on an acclimatization walk to help your body adjust to the altitude.
Day four is the steepest push: you climb to Lava Tower at 4,640 meters—the highest point of that day—then descend to Barranco Camp in the Great Barranco Valley, where towering cliffs shelter the camp and views stretch across the plains below. Days five and six are shorter, designed for acclimatization; you cross the Barranco Wall beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, pass through Karanga Camp, and arrive at Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. Dinner is early. Alarms go off at midnight.
Day seven is the summit day. You climb for four to five hours in darkness, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim as the sun rises, then push the final hour to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. After photos and celebration, you descend back to Barafu for lunch, then continue down to Millennium Camp at 3,950 meters. The final day is a two-hour walk to Mweka Gate at 1,630 meters, where you collect your certificate, say goodbye to the guides, and return to your hotel in Moshi. Professional guides speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and 25 other languages; children are welcome from age nine.

What's the Lemosho route like compared to other ways up Kilimanjaro?
The Lemosho route is the western approach, newer than some alternatives and known for lower crowds and excellent scenery. It circles the mountain through rainforest and moorland, offering panoramic views on multiple sides, and has a high summit success rate. The operator reports that the majority of their clients use this route and feedback is consistently strong.
How does altitude sickness get managed during the eight days?
Professional guides perform regular health checks on all climbers throughout the trek and are trained to detect and treat altitude sickness. The route itself is designed with acclimatization days built in—shorter hiking days at days five and six—to help your body adjust as you gain elevation.
What do I need to bring, and what's provided?
The trek includes all camping equipment, mountain hardware, sleeping tents, sleep pads, sleeping bags, tables and chairs. You also get treated water throughout the trek, a first aid kit, and emergency oxygen. Bring personal clothing, toiletries, and any medications; the operator handles the rest of the gear and logistics.
When does the summit attempt happen, and how long is the final push?
You start climbing from Barafu Camp at midnight on day seven. The ascent to the crater rim at Stella Point takes four to five hours, then another hour from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. You descend the same day to Barafu for lunch, then continue down to Millennium Camp.
How do I get to Londorossi Gate, and what happens on arrival?
Hotel pickup in Moshi is included; a private car collects you around 8 a.m. on day one and drives you to Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain. Once there, the operator handles all pre-hike formalities—permits, registration, gear checks—before the hike begins.
What happens after I reach the summit and come back down?
After summiting Uhuru Peak and descending to Millennium Camp on day seven, you hike out to Mweka Gate on day eight—a couple of hours' walk. At the gate you collect your summit certificate, then a private car returns you to your hotel in Moshi, where two nights' accommodation are included so you can rest and recover.
