Seven days on the Machame Route, built for acclimatization and summiting

A 7-day trek up Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, starting at Machame Gate and descending the Mweka trail, with a qualified English-speaking guide, mountain crew, camping equipment, all meals and private transport included. The longer route and "walk high, sleep low" strategy give climbers better acclimatization than faster alternatives, which is why the Machame Route has a very high success rate. Pre- and post-trek accommodation in Moshi is available on request.

The experience

You start at Machame Gate at 1,800 metres on the southwest side of the mountain, where the climb begins through rainforest on day one. From there the route traverses the southern flank, passing Shira Camp where the Lemosho route joins from the west, then continues to Lava Tower and the Great Barranco Wall before reaching Barafu Camp. The final push takes you to the summit, and you descend via the Mweka trail instead of retracing the ascent. The Machame Route is longer and steeper in places than the Marangu route, but that extra distance is deliberate: it lets you climb higher during the day and sleep lower at night, giving your body time to adjust to altitude. That strategy is why the success rate here is very high.

Your guide has a minimum of 8 years of experience on Kilimanjaro and is certified in wilderness first aid. Daily health checks happen throughout the trek to catch altitude issues early. The mountain crew includes the guide, a chef, a waiter and porters who handle the camp setup and cooking. Breakfast and lunch are freshly prepared each day on the mountain, and dinner is cooked by the expert chef. Coffee and tea are provided. All camping equipment (private tents, dining tent, tables, chairs, mattresses and utensils) is included. Private transportation gets you from Moshi to Machame Gate and back after descent.

Emergency oxygen is carried on all climbs. The trek demands at least moderate physical fitness. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Children are welcome from age 10. The 7-day timeline means you have the full week to acclimatize and reach the summit without rushing the ascent.

Is this one for you?The 7-day timeline is what makes the acclimatization strategy work: you climb high during the day and sleep lower at night, giving your body time to adjust to altitude without rushing. If you have a full week and want the highest chance of reaching the summit, this route is built for that. Faster alternatives compress the ascent into fewer days and leave less room for your body to adapt.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (10 to 15 years). Children under 10 can't be included in the booking.

What is the Machame Route like compared to other Kilimanjaro trails?

The Machame Route is longer and steeper than the Marangu route, but the extra distance is the advantage: you climb high during the day and sleep lower at night, which acclimatizes you better and gives you a very high chance of reaching the summit. It is nicknamed the Whiskey Route for being more demanding, but the real benefit is the acclimatization strategy, not technical difficulty.

Who is guiding the climb and what is their experience?

Your guide has a minimum of 8 years of experience on Kilimanjaro and is certified in wilderness first aid. The mountain crew also includes a chef, a waiter and porters. Daily health checks happen throughout the trek to monitor your condition and catch altitude issues early.

What meals and equipment are provided on the mountain?

Freshly prepared breakfast and lunch are cooked each day, and dinner is prepared by the expert chef. Coffee and tea are provided. All camping equipment is included: private tents, dining tent, tables, chairs, mattresses and utensils. The crew handles all setup and cooking.

How does the 7-day timeline affect my chances of summiting?

Seven days on the Machame Route gives your body time to acclimatize properly. The route's strategy of climbing high and sleeping low over that full week is why the success rate is very high. Faster routes compress the ascent and leave less time for your body to adjust to altitude.

What happens after I reach the summit?

You descend via the Mweka trail, which is a different route than the one you climbed. This descent takes you down the mountain without retracing your steps, and private transport returns you to Moshi afterward.

Can I arrange accommodation in Moshi before or after the trek?

Pre- and post-trek accommodation in Moshi is available on request. Ask when you book if you want to add nights before arrival or after descent.
