The Experience
Hands grip the handlebars as the guide ahead leans into a rocky section, testing the trail before you follow. That's how the Kilema route works—your guide rides alongside you the whole way, reading the terrain and setting the pace. Starting from Moshi, you'll spend 45 minutes driving to Marangu gate for registration, then head to Kilema gate where the real climbing begins. The first day is 16km uphill through thinning forest to Horombo Hut at 3,705m, and it's steep enough that you'll stop often. The biggest mistake people make on Kilimanjaro is going up too fast, so these pauses aren't wasted time—they're how your body learns to breathe thinner air.
Days two and three are built around acclimatization, which sounds like rest but isn't. You'll ride out to Mawenzi Hut and back (10km through Alpine desert), then tackle the Saddle—the flat stretch between the two peaks where cycling gets easier until the altitude hits you. By day four, you're at Kibo Hut preparing for the summit push. That night you'll sleep a few hours, then wake at 4am to hike (not bike) the steep zigzag to Hans Meyer's Cave, then Gilman's Point. Only here do you mount the bike again and ride the final stretch to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. The descent back to Horombo takes the afternoon; the last 3km down is technical and your legs will feel it. Day six is the final ride down through rainforest back to Kilema gate, then a transfer to your hotel in Moshi.
Your guide is on a bike too, which changes everything. They're not walking behind you checking a clipboard—they're reading the trail, managing your pace, and watching for signs of altitude sickness. Porters carry your gear and meet you at key points. The whole operation is built around the fact that mountain biking at altitude is harder than it sounds, so the schedule gives you time to adapt. If you're fit and have ridden before, you'll manage the cycling sections. If you're not, the hiking sections (especially summit night) will humble you, but that's the mountain, not the tour.

No. You bike to Kibo Hut, then hike the steep sections to Gilman's Point. From there you ride to Uhuru Peak, then bike back down to Stella Point before descending on foot to Horombo.
What if I'm not a strong cyclist?
The route includes long hiking sections, especially on summit night. You need moderate fitness and some mountain biking experience. The guide will adjust pace, but steep terrain and altitude are non-negotiable.
How long is each day of riding?
Day one is 16km uphill. Day two is 10km through Alpine desert. Day three includes a 7km climb and 7km technical descent. Days four and five are hiking-focused. Day six is the final 16km descent to the gate.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?
The itinerary includes two full acclimatization days at Horombo Hut specifically to prevent it. If symptoms appear, the guide can adjust the pace or descend. Porters and guides are trained in altitude management.
What's the accommodation like?
You stay at mountain huts (Horombo and Kibo) during the trek, with basic facilities. Before and after, you're in a hotel in Moshi (Chanya Lodge or your own choice).
Do I need a guide?
Yes. An experienced guide rides with you the entire trek and is included in the price. Porters are also part of the crew.
What's included in the price?
Private transport to and from gates, all hut accommodation during the trek, guide and porter wages, hotel accommodation in Moshi before and after, and airport pickup and drop-off.
