Seven days through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert to Africa's highest summit.

The Lemosho Route private hiking tour on Kilimanjaro is a 7-day trek starting on the remote western side of the mountain, moving through rainforest and moorland before the final push to Uhuru Peak at 19,341 feet. The route follows the "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization principle, which the operator reports yields a 97% success rate to the summit. A professional guide leads in your choice of language; porters handle camp setup and meals; you hike with trekking poles and rest between elevation gains.

The Experience

The climb begins four hours from Moshi at Lemosho Gate, where formalities are completed before you enter undisturbed forest on the western slope — a quieter start than the crowded Marangu or Machame routes. The first two days move through rainforest and heath, gaining elevation gradually from 7,742 feet to 12,500 feet. By day three, you're in the alpine desert, climbing to the Lava Tower at 15,190 feet, then descending to Barranco Camp. This up-and-down pattern is deliberate: spending time at higher altitude without sleeping there trains your body to handle the thin air.

Days four and five keep you in the alpine desert, crossing the steep Barranco Wall and climbing to Barafu Camp at 15,331 feet. The summit push begins around midnight on day six. You'll hike in darkness for seven to eight hours, the cold and wind intense at this elevation, but near Stella Point at 18,900 feet the sunrise breaks over Mawenzi Peak — then the final stretch to Uhuru Peak. The descent that same day is long and rocky; trekking poles protect your knees on the way down to Mweka Camp. On day seven, you descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate, collect your summit certificate, and drive back to Moshi.

Your guide speaks English, Spanish, French, German or another language you choose at booking. Porters pitch tents, set up a portable toilet, and prepare meals at each camp. You bring or arrange personal hiking gear; the operator provides the tent and camping furniture. Airport pickup and drop-off are included, so transport from Moshi is arranged before you arrive.

Top questions

What is the Lemosho Route and why does it have a higher success rate than other Kilimanjaro trails?

The Lemosho Route starts on the remote western side of Kilimanjaro and takes seven days to reach Uhuru Peak, compared to five or six days on the more direct Marangu and Machame routes. The longer timeline lets your body adjust to altitude gradually — the operator reports a 97% success rate to Uhuru Peak on this route, versus lower rates on faster climbs. The route also follows fewer hikers, so the early days feel like wilderness rather than a crowded trail.

How much climbing and hiking happens each day on the Lemosho Route?

Daily hiking ranges from two to eight hours depending on the day. The first day is two to three hours through forest. Days two through five average four to five hours each, moving through moorland and alpine desert with elevation gains between 1,000 and 2,000 feet per day. Day six is the summit push: seven to eight hours of hiking in darkness and extreme cold to reach Uhuru Peak, followed by a four- to six-hour descent the same day. Day seven is a three- to four-hour descent through rainforest to the gate.

What happens on the night of the summit attempt?

You leave Barafu Camp around midnight and hike in darkness for several hours, taking short breaks to rest. The wind and cold at 15,000+ feet are severe. Near Stella Point at 18,900 feet, sunrise breaks over Mawenzi Peak — a moment the operator describes as the most magnificent sunrise most climbers ever see. From there, the final push to Uhuru Peak takes another hour or two. After reaching the summit, you descend the same day, stopping at Barafu for lunch before continuing to Mweka Camp.

What gear and equipment does the tour provide, and what do I need to bring?

The operator provides tents, camping table and chair, a portable toilet, and all meals at camp. Your guide and porters handle setup and cooking. You need to arrange or bring personal hiking gear — boots, layers, a sleeping bag, trekking poles and other cold-weather clothing. The operator can advise on gear rental or purchase before you arrive in Moshi.

How does the guide help with altitude sickness and acclimatization?

Your professional guide monitors how you're feeling each day and adjusts the pace if needed. The Lemosho Route itself is designed for acclimatization: days three and four include climbing to higher elevations and then descending to sleep lower, which trains your body to process oxygen more efficiently. The seven-day timeline gives your system more days to adapt than faster routes. The operator reports a 100% success rate to Stella Point and a 97% rate to Uhuru Peak.

What is included in the price, and what costs extra?

The tour includes a professional guide, porter support, all camping equipment, meals, airport pickup and drop-off from Moshi, and a portable toilet. Kilimanjaro entrance fees are paid when you arrive at the gate and are not included in the tour price. Tips to the mountain crew are customary but not required. Hotel accommodation in Moshi before and after the climb is not included; you arrange that separately.
