Seven days climbing Kilimanjaro's steepest route to the summit at sunrise

You climb from rainforest through moorland and semi-desert to the Arctic zone, spending six nights in mountain camps and summiting before dawn on day six. Hotel pickup from Arusha, all park fees, and camp accommodation are included; you bring fitness, trekking poles, and layers for temperatures that drop well below freezing at altitude. The Machame Route is the steepest approach, which means you earn the views early and spend the middle days acclimatizing rather than climbing.

The Experience

So you're actually doing this — the Machame Route, which means starting steep and staying steep for the first two days until you hit the Shira Plateau at 3,900 metres. The drive from Arusha to Moshi takes about 50 minutes, then another 50 minutes to the Machame Gate, and from there you're walking through rainforest on a winding ridge that can be muddy and slippery depending on the season. The first day is 11 kilometres and takes 5 to 7 hours, climbing from 5,400 feet to 9,400 feet, and by the time you reach Machame Camp your legs know you've started something real.

Day two pushes you higher — another 5 kilometres but steeper, crossing a rocky ridge covered in heather until you drop into a river gorge and arrive at Shira Camp at 12,500 feet. From here, the view west over the jagged peaks of the Shira Plateau at sunset is the kind of thing you'll still be thinking about months later. The next three days are about acclimatization as much as altitude gain. You climb to the Lava Tower (called the Shark's Tooth), drop down to Barranco Camp, cross the Barranco Wall, and move through the Karanga Valley and up to Barafu Camp at 15,300 feet. Each camp is a tent site with meals provided, and the rhythm becomes familiar — breakfast, hike, camp, dinner, sleep, repeat. The distances are short on purpose; the elevation is doing the work.

Summit day starts at 2 AM from Barafu Camp. You'll climb 5 kilometres in 7 to 8 hours, mostly in darkness, reaching Stella Point at 18,600 feet where the sunrise hits (if the weather cooperates). From there, another hour to Uhuru Peak at 19,345 feet — the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. The descent is long and loose; you'll drop down to Mweka Hut the same day, stopping at Barafu for lunch, and the gravel and scree mean gaiters and trekking poles are not optional. Your last night on the mountain is in the upper forest where mist rolls in by late afternoon.

The final morning is a 3 to 4 hour walk down through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you collect your summit certificate, then another hour to Mweka Village where a vehicle picks you up and drives you back to your hotel in Arusha. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with all park fees and accommodation in mountain camps for seven nights. You'll need at least moderate fitness and the ability to hike for several hours a day at altitude — this is not a casual walk, and the early starts and thin air mean some days feel harder than the distance suggests.

What’s included

Your seven days include hotel pickup and drop-off from Arusha, all Mount Kilimanjaro National Park entrance fees, accommodation in mountain camps (Machame, Shira, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu, and Mweka), meals at each camp, and a final night at Maura Apartment & Lodge in Arusha before your departure flight. You arrange your own flights to and from Tanzania and provide your own trekking gear (poles, boots, layers, sleeping bag liner if desired), though some operators rent equipment locally.

Is this one for you? This trek suits anyone fit enough for several hours of daily hiking who wants to reach Kilimanjaro's summit without technical climbing or mountaineering experience — the Machame Route is steep but straightforward, and the six nights in camps mean you're not rushing the acclimatization that makes the difference between summiting and turning back.

Top questions

How many days is the Kilimanjaro Machame trek?

Seven days total, including two days for travel to and from Arusha. You spend six nights on the mountain in camps.

What is the elevation gain on the Machame Route?

You start at 5,400 feet at Machame Gate and reach Uhuru Peak at 19,345 feet. The route climbs steeply in the first two days to Shira Plateau at 3,900 metres (12,500 feet), then acclimatizes for three days before the summit push.

What is included in the trek cost?

Hotel pickup and drop-off from Arusha, all Mount Kilimanjaro National Park fees, and accommodation in mountain camps for seven nights. Meals are provided at camp.

Do I need previous trekking experience?

No, but you need at least moderate physical fitness. The Machame Route is steep and the altitude is the main challenge, not technical climbing. Most people who train with regular cardio and hiking can complete it.

What time does the summit attempt start?

You leave Barafu Camp at 2 AM on summit day. The climb to Uhuru Peak takes 7 to 8 hours, and you reach the summit in time for sunrise at Stella Point (18,600 feet) before the final push to the peak.

Is the Machame Route the hardest way up Kilimanjaro?

It is the steepest route, which means you gain altitude quickly in the first two days. This makes the early days physically demanding, but the middle days are designed for acclimatization before the summit push.

What happens if I don't reach the summit?

The trek continues to Barafu Camp and the summit attempt regardless. If you cannot summit due to altitude or fitness, you descend with the group to Mweka Hut and then to the gate. The descent is part of the itinerary.

Can I do the Machame trek if I have a medical condition?

The trek is not recommended for pregnant travelers, those with spinal injuries, or those with poor cardiovascular health. Consult a doctor before booking if you have any concerns about altitude or physical exertion.
