The Experience
The trek starts with a 50-minute drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, then climbs through dense rain forest on a winding ridge trail for 5 to 7 hours to reach Machame Camp at 9,350 feet. Day two ascends through heather and moorland to Shira 2 Camp at 12,500 feet in 4 to 6 hours. The route then crosses the Shira Plateau, passes a 300-foot volcanic rock formation called Lava Tower, and descends through a strange forest of giant Senecio plants to Barranco Camp—a day designed for acclimatization even though you start and end at nearly the same elevation. Each camp provides a tent, sleeping mattress, table and chairs; hot water arrives for washing each evening.
Days four and five push higher and steeper. The Barranco Wall is a nearly 900-foot cliff that looks technical but is not—you climb it without ropes, then cross a series of hills and valleys to Karanga Camp. From there, the trail rises to Barafu Camp at 15,331 feet, where you rest and eat an early dinner before the summit push. A cook prepares breakfast, lunch and dinner every day on the mountain; drinking water is provided. Porters carry tents, food and group equipment so you carry only a day pack.
Summit day begins around midnight from Barafu Camp. You climb 5 kilometers in 7 to 8 hours through arctic conditions—wind and extreme cold are real—taking frequent short breaks in darkness. Near Stella Point at 18,900 feet, sunrise breaks over Mawenzi Peak as you approach Uhuru Peak at 19,341 feet, the highest point on the continent. A guide who has summited many times leads the way and watches for altitude sickness. After reaching the peak and taking photos, you descend the same day to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The final day is a 3 to 4-hour walk down through rain forest to Mweka Gate, where the national park stamps and signs your personal summit certificate. A vehicle meets you at Mweka Village for the drive back to your hotel in Moshi.

What is the Machame Route and why do people choose it for Kilimanjaro?
The Machame Route is a seven-day path up Kilimanjaro that circles the mountain through five different habitats—rain forest, heath, alpine desert, arctic and back to rain forest on descent. It is longer than the faster routes, which means more time to acclimatize and better odds of reaching the summit safely; it also passes through more varied landscape than the direct routes.
How much hiking do I actually do each day on this trek?
Hiking times range from 3 to 8 hours per day depending on the stage. Day one is 5 to 7 hours through rain forest; days two and three are 4 to 6 hours each; day four is 4 to 5 hours; day five is 4 to 5 hours; summit day is 7 to 8 hours of climbing at night, then 4 to 6 hours descending; the final day is 3 to 4 hours down to the gate. Days four and five are shorter to help your body adjust to altitude.
What happens if I get altitude sickness on the mountain?
The trek is designed to reduce altitude sickness risk: you spend two days acclimatizing at mid-altitude before pushing higher, and the guide watches for symptoms throughout. An emergency first aid kit travels with the group, rescue fees are included if evacuation becomes necessary, and a pulse oximeter monitors oxygen levels. The guide in English can communicate any concerns clearly and adjust the pace if needed.
What do I need to bring, and what does the trek provide?
The trek includes all camping gear—tent, sleeping mattress, table and chairs—plus three meals daily on the mountain, hot water for washing, and a portable flushable toilet. You bring your own hiking clothes, boots, layers for cold nights, a day pack and personal items; sleeping bag and trekking poles are optional but recommended. Tips for the guide, cook and porters are not included in the price.
How does the summit night work, and what is it really like?
You leave Barafu Camp around midnight and climb in darkness for several hours with frequent short breaks, moving slowly to conserve energy at extreme altitude. Wind and cold are intense. As dawn approaches near Stella Point at 18,900 feet, the sunrise over Mawenzi Peak marks the final push to Uhuru Peak. After photos at the summit, you descend the same day—a total of 11 to 14 hours of hiking on summit day, which is why the earlier days focus on building fitness and acclimatization.
Will I have a guide the whole time, and what language do they speak?
A professional mountain guide in English leads the trek from start to finish. The guide has summited Kilimanjaro many times, watches for altitude sickness, manages the pace and leads the summit push. Porters and a cook travel with the group as well, so you are never alone on the mountain.
