The Experience
You arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and a Dakik Expeditions representative meets you with a sign bearing your name. After transfer to Sanna Boutique Hotel in Arusha, you'll meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing, equipment check, and safety overview — the team can help with any last-minute gear rentals. The next morning, you drive roughly two hours through local villages and plantations to Machame Gate, where registration and permit handling happen before the trek officially begins. The first day climbs through lush rainforest where black-and-white colobus monkeys and tropical birds move through the canopy; your tents are already pitched at Machame Camp when you arrive, and a hot meal prepared by your mountain chef is waiting.
Days two through five follow the "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization strategy that keeps your body adapting safely to altitude. You move from heather and moorland into alpine desert, crossing the Shira Plateau and passing Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp — a crucial rest day that lets your system adjust before the final push. The Barranco Wall on day five is a short, steep scramble that opens onto views of the glaciers above; from there, rolling ridges lead to Karanga Camp, the last water point before the summit attempt. At each camp, your crew has tents ready, warm water for washing, and hot tea or drinks waiting. Your guide monitors oxygen levels and pacing throughout, and a Wilderness First Responder certified team member is always present. You'll see Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro's rugged twin, as you ascend through barren terrain to Barafu Camp on day six.
Your summit push begins around midnight under stars. You follow your guide slowly upward, reaching Stella Point (5,739 m) for sunrise and a warm cup of tea — a moment the itinerary describes as unforgettable. From there, the final push takes you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend to Mweka Camp for a hot meal and rest. The final day drops through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your official summit certificate before your driver transfers you back to Arusha. A ninth day allows a relaxed morning in Arusha before airport transfer, or you can continue onward to safari or beach destinations in Tanzania.

What's included in the meals during the climb?
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all prepared by Dakik Expeditions' mountain chef throughout the trek. Drinking water and hot beverages are provided at every camp, and special meals are served at key moments — warm tea at sunrise on summit day, for example.
How does the guide help with altitude acclimatization?
Your Wilderness First Responder certified guide sets an easy pace and monitors oxygen levels throughout the climb. The route itself uses the "climb high, sleep low" strategy: you ascend to higher elevations during the day, then descend to lower camps at night, giving your body time to adjust before moving higher again.
What happens if I don't reach the summit?
Dakik Expeditions maintains a 98% summit success rate, and your guide prioritizes your safety and comfort over reaching the peak. If altitude, weather, or physical condition makes the summit unsafe, your guide will turn back and you'll descend with full support from the crew.
What's the Barranco Wall and how difficult is it?
The Barranco Wall is a short but steep scramble on day five that connects Barranco Camp to the ridge above. It's described as exciting and rewards you with breathtaking views of the glaciers, but it's a brief technical section rather than a sustained climb.
Are guides available in languages other than English?
Dakik Expeditions provides professional mountain guides who speak English, Spanish, Italian, French, and two additional languages. You can request your preferred language when booking.
What accommodation is provided in Arusha?
You stay at Sanna Boutique Hotel for two nights — one before the climb begins and one after you return from the mountain. Airport transfers to and from Kilimanjaro International Airport are included.
