The Experience
The trek begins one hour's drive from Moshi at Machame Gate, where you meet your crew of porters and guides before climbing into dense rainforest. The first day's path is less well-trodden and often wet underfoot as it climbs steadily through lush vegetation. From there, the route ascends through changing landscapes—from rainforest to high moorland to alpine scree—with each camp positioned to help your body adjust to altitude. You sleep in tents at each stop and wake to three meals prepared by your mountain cook.
The middle days take you across the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing under the Lava Tower and the Western Breach, then descending into the Great Barranco before climbing the long Barranco Wall. By day five, you're on scree terrain heading toward Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. The summit push starts around midnight on day six: a steep 4- to 5-hour climb on scree brings you to Stella Point on the crater rim as sunrise hits, then another hour to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. You descend the same day to Millennium Camp, then finish with a gentle trek through rainforest back to Mweka Gate, where you receive your climbing certificate before returning to Moshi.
Your guide speaks English and leads the entire trek. The crew includes porters who carry the heavy gear and a cook who prepares meals at each camp. You get treated and filtered drinking water throughout, a 4-season mountain tent, a thick sleeping mat, hot water for washing, and a first-aid kit. Private transfers pick you up from your hotel in Moshi, take you to Machame Gate, and return you to town after the descent. Park fees, government taxes, and the guide's wages are included; you arrange your own trekking gear and personal items.

Is this one for you?Book this trek if you're starting from Moshi without a car—private transfers handle the drive to Machame Gate and back to town, so you don't arrange transport yourself. The 6-day schedule and tent camps give your body time to adjust to altitude, making the summit more achievable than faster routes, though the steeper daily climbs demand moderate fitness and preparation.

What's the difference between the Machame and Marangu routes on Kilimanjaro?
The Machame Route, also called the Whiskey route, climbs steeper trails for longer distances each day and uses tent camps instead of huts. The Marangu Route, known as the Coca Cola route, has a gentler incline and hut accommodations. Machame's tougher schedule and tent camping provide better altitude acclimatization over six days.
How many hours of hiking do you do each day on the Machame trek?
Day two from Machame Camp to Shira Camp takes about 5 to 6 hours. Other days vary depending on the terrain and altitude; the summit push on day six is 4 to 5 hours of steep climbing on scree, starting around midnight.
What do you sleep in during the 6-day trek?
You sleep in 4-season mountain tents at each camp, with a double-layered sleeping mat 10 centimeters thick. Hot water is provided for washing, and your crew sets up camp each evening after you arrive.
Does the trek include meals and water?
Yes, three meals daily are prepared by your mountain cook while on the mountain. Treated and filtered drinking water is provided throughout the trek to keep you hydrated at altitude.
What happens after you reach Uhuru Peak?
After reaching the summit at 5,895 meters, you descend the same day back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Millennium Camp for rest. On day six, you trek through rainforest to Mweka Gate, complete park formalities, receive your climbing certificate, and return to your hotel in Moshi.
Are transfers from the airport and hotel included?
Yes, private pickup and drop-off to Kilimanjaro International Airport are included, as well as private transfer from your hotel in Moshi to Machame Gate and back after the trek ends.
