The Experience
The trek begins at Marangu Gate (1,843m) where you meet your crew, complete park registration and enter a dense, mist-covered forest. The first day's walk passes through woodland where blue monkeys and colobus move through the canopy, with a picnic lunch stop at Kisambioni before you reach Mandara Hut (2,700m). The huts are wooden A-frame structures with bunk beds—bring your own sleeping bag—and the routine stays the same each night: guides and porters manage meals and camp setup while you rest.
Days two through four take you up through alpine meadows and moorland, each camp higher than the last. On day three, you use Horombo Hut (3,720m) as an acclimatization base, choosing between a short walk to Zebra Rock (4,000m) or a longer four- to five-hour climb of Mawenzi Peak, the mountain's eastern summit. The landscape shifts from green to sparse grass and rock as altitude climbs. Day four pushes to Kibo Hut (4,703m) across the Saddle—a broad lava-stone ridge between the two peaks—where you eat an early meal and sleep before the summit push.
The final ascent starts at midnight from Kibo Hut. The trail zigzags up a long scree slope past Hans Meyer Cave, then narrows into a single-file line. Gillmans Point (5,685m) sits on the crater rim; from there, two more hours of scrambling over rock leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa's highest point. You'll reach the summit around sunrise, stand above the ice fields and see Mawenzi below you, then descend back through Kibo Hut and down to Horombo for your last night. The final day retraces the route through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and return to your hotel.

Is this one for you?The midnight summit push and steep sections demand sustained effort over six days—this trek suits climbers with moderate fitness who can walk uphill for hours and handle altitude above 4,700m. The hut-based format means you walk carrying only a day pack, but early starts, thin air and the final 12–15 hour summit day are the trade-off for not camping.

What's the Marangu Route and how does it compare to other ways up Kilimanjaro?
The Marangu Route is the oldest established path, using mountain huts for accommodation instead of camping. It follows a direct line from Marangu Gate through forest and moorland to the summit, then descends the same way, making it a point-to-point trek rather than a loop.
How much walking happens each day on this 6-day trek?
Day one covers roughly 5 hours from gate to Mandara Hut; day two is a full day to Horombo; day three is an acclimatization day with optional short hikes; day four is a steep climb to Kibo Hut; day five is the midnight summit push lasting 12–15 hours; day six is the descent back to the gate.
What do the hut accommodations include?
Mandara and Horombo huts are wooden structures with bunk beds in shared rooms—each room sleeps four. You provide your own sleeping bag. Meals are prepared by the camp cook and eaten communally; guides and porters handle water, firewood and camp duties.
What animals or wildlife might I see on the trek?
The forest zone holds blue monkeys, black and white colobus and bushbaby. Higher up, the moorland and alpine zones have fewer large animals; the trek focuses on the mountain environment and landscape rather than wildlife viewing.
Is the midnight summit push really the hardest part?
Yes—the final ascent from Kibo Hut is the longest and most demanding day. The trail is very steep, the scramble to Gillmans Point on the crater rim is the most challenging section, and altitude combined with darkness and fatigue make it the physical peak of the trek.
What's included in the cost and what do I need to arrange separately?
Included are professional guides, cooks and porters, all meals, hut accommodation, government taxes, parking fees and transfers to and from the gate. Not included are international flights, travel insurance, visa fees and beverages—bring cash for drinks and tips.
