The Experience

This day hike starts with pickup from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, then drives to Marangu Gate (1,860m), where the trail enters the lush montane rainforest. The path is well-maintained and moderate—not steep scrambling, but steady uphill for several hours through dense vegetation where your guide points out blue monkeys, striking black-and-white colobus monkeys, and plants found nowhere else on earth.

The hike takes 5 to 7 hours round-trip. Partway up, the forest opens into a clearing where you stop for a gourmet packed lunch with mineral water, and from there you can see Mundi Crater—a volcanic crater on the mountainside with panoramic views across the slopes. After lunch, you continue to Mandara Hut (2,720m), the stone shelter that marks the turnaround point, then descend the same trail back to the gate. A certified professional guide walks with you the entire way and knows the mountain's ecology in depth; they also carry the emergency protocols required by the national park.
