The Experience

Li, our pilot, greeted us at the hotel with this easy grin — you could tell he’d done this a thousand times but still enjoyed every bit. He asked if I was nervous and I said, “Only a little,” which was a lie (I was way more than that). The van ride up to the takeoff spot near Tejina Mountain felt longer than it probably was; maybe it’s just that my hands wouldn’t stop fidgeting. The air up there had that dry, almost dusty smell you only get on Tenerife’s south coast in spring, mixed with something like wild herbs crushed underfoot.

I kept looking out at Barranco del Infierno below, thinking how small everything looked already — and we hadn’t even taken off yet. Li clipped me into the harness and explained again how to run when he said go. It wasn’t graceful (I nearly tripped on my own foot), but suddenly we were airborne. The wind pressed against my face and there was this weird silence — not total quiet, but softer than I expected, just the sound of fabric fluttering and Li pointing things out: “That’s La Gomera over there,” he said, nodding toward a blue smudge on the horizon. I tried to say “gracias” for calming me down; probably butchered it.

The whole paragliding tandem flight over Costa Adeje lasted maybe 20 minutes? Time got slippery up there. At one point we caught a thermal and circled higher — my stomach did a little flip but then settled as I realized how steady it felt. You see the coastline curve away under your feet, all those white hotels and volcanic cliffs. When we landed (on actual feet! no faceplants), Li showed me some photos he’d snapped midair — honestly, I looked ridiculous in most of them but kept two anyway. Still think about that view sometimes when I’m back home in city noise.
