Parasailing in Tenerife is a tandem flight where you're harnessed to an experienced instructor and towed aloft to soar silently over the island's coastline and beaches. The Gold package runs up to 40 minutes, includes HD video and photos of the flight, an Airsports t-shirt, a bottle of cava, and pickup from Costa Adeje. You can try steering the glider with the pilot's guidance, or simply float and take in the view.

The experience

What does it feel like to leave the ground without an engine? Airsports Tenerife has been flying tandem since 1988, and their Gold flight package is built around that moment: the few quick steps at takeoff, then the weightless float away from the hillside. You're harnessed to a pilot who handles the flight while you settle into the harness (surprisingly comfortable) and adjust to the silence. The pilot keeps a running commentary pointing out landmarks below and explaining how the glider works, then hunts for thermal updrafts to climb higher and stretch the flight toward its 40-minute maximum. If conditions allow, you'll land on the soft sand of La Caleta beach, the sound of Atlantic waves underneath.

The whole experience takes about two hours from pickup to landing. A Mercedes Vito collects you from your hotel in Costa Adeje and drives you to the takeoff site, where you're fitted with a helmet and harness and given a brief on the procedures. A GoPro camera films the flight, and you'll get the full HD video and photos afterward: the thing most people want to relive. The t-shirt and bottle of cava are waiting when you land, a small ceremony that marks the end of something most people only dream about.

Your pilot will offer you the chance to take the controls if you want it, with close guidance the whole time. It's optional (some people prefer to float and watch), but the option is there. Children from age 4 can fly, though the maximum weight is 100kg. The company speaks English, Spanish, Italian, German and several other languages, and pickup is included within Costa Adeje.

Can I actually steer the paraglider, or does the pilot do everything?

Your pilot handles the flight, but you can ask to try the controls with their close guidance and help. It's entirely optional: some flyers prefer to sit back and take in the view, and that's fine too.

Where do you take off from, and where do you land?

Takeoff is from a hillside site that Airsports reaches by vehicle from your hotel. Landing is on the soft sand of La Caleta beach if conditions allow, so you'll touch down on your feet to the sound of the Atlantic.

Do I get to keep the video and photos?

Yes. The GoPro camera films the entire flight, and you receive the HD video and photos as part of the Gold package, along with an Airsports t-shirt and a bottle of cava.
