The Experience

We rolled up the winding roads above Costa Adeje, music thumping a bit too loud for my nerves but somehow making it all feel lighter. Daniel—our guide, apparently a world champ (he didn’t act like it)—kept cracking jokes in three languages and asking if we wanted “tranquilo or loco” for our flight. I said tranquilo, but my friend just grinned at me. The air smelled faintly salty and warm, even this high up. I kept fiddling with the harness straps while Daniel checked everything again, super methodical but never rushed.

The actual moment of takeoff is hard to explain. One second you’re jogging awkwardly downhill, then suddenly your feet aren’t touching anything and there’s nothing but wind and that weird silence you only get above it all. You see Teide off to the left—just floating there—and the ocean folds out underneath you like a blue sheet someone shook out. I tried to say something clever but just ended up laughing (nervous? happy? both). Daniel pointed out little villages below; you could see tiny white houses tucked into green patches. He offered to do some stunts—I hesitated, then thought why not? It was wild, spinning once or twice, but honestly not scary like I’d imagined.

Landing was softer than I expected—my knees barely bent. Right away they handed me my phone loaded with GoPro shots: me looking terrified, then grinning like an idiot mid-air. I still scroll through those sometimes when work gets too heavy. We sat around for a bit after, drinking water and watching another group take off. Someone asked if we’d do it again and I said yes without thinking much about it—guess that says enough.
