The experience

The meeting point is the parking lot at Carvalho beach, where you'll meet your guide and get a safety briefing before heading down an ancient carved tunnel in the rock to reach the water. Carvalho sits just five minutes from the busier Benagil beach but stays quieter: the tunnel entrance and limestone walls rising from the water are the first thing you paddle past. Your guide carries knowledge of the local geology, history and biodiversity, and will point out the rock formations as you move through the water.

From there, the route moves through hidden caves and along Benagil beach toward the famous Benagil Cave, where the sinkhole opens above the water and the light comes through the ceiling. You'll have roughly 30 minutes to explore (either on your own or following the guide to fossil spots), and the guides will take 4K photos at the sinkhole and other picturesque spots along the way, which you get to keep. After the cave, you paddle toward Marinha beach, passing under the natural stone arches and stopping for more photos. If time and the group's pace allow, you'll visit the Island of the Smuggler, where a tunnel cuts through the rock formation and opens to two holes in the ceiling the guides call "the blue eyes."

All equipment comes with you: kayak, paddle, lifevest, and dry bags for cameras, phones and keys. Insurance is included. The paddle back to Carvalho takes about five minutes from the lighthouse, and the beach is yours for sunbathing or swimming once you're back on land.
