Summary

Algarve cliffs, Benagil caves and secret beaches by boat

You’ll cruise from Portimão past Ferragudo’s castle and along Algarve’s wild coast, exploring hidden grottoes and entering Benagil Cave by boat with a local guide. There’s time for swimming in clear Atlantic water—and plenty of chances to soak in sunlit cliffs and local stories along the way.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We were already gliding out of Portimão before I realized how salty the air actually tastes here. Our skipper, João, pointed at Ferragudo’s little fishing boats bobbing near the old castle—he called it “the quiet side,” and I could see why. There was a dog barking somewhere on shore, but mostly just the slap of water against the hull and that low murmur people get when they’re half-excited, half-awake. I tried to snap a photo but ended up with my thumb in the corner. Typical.

The coastline east toward Carvoeiro is all crumpled gold cliffs and tiny beaches tucked between rocks—some so small you’d miss them if you blinked. João slowed down as we neared Algar Seco, letting us drift close enough to see the layers in the stone. He told us about storms that carve new shapes every year; his voice got softer inside the first cave, echoing off wet walls. At Benagil Cave itself, sunlight poured through that round hole overhead like someone left a lamp on above us. The smell inside was part ocean, part cool stone—hard to describe unless you’ve been there with your feet dangling over the side.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a boat tour but there we were: someone dared me to jump in for a swim (I did, badly), and João handed out towels like he’d seen it all before. The Atlantic was colder than I thought—kind of wakes you up quick. On the way back west toward Portimão, everyone went quiet for a bit. Maybe it was just the breeze or maybe we were all thinking about that light inside Benagil Cave. Still can’t decide if my favorite part was João’s stories or just watching sunlight flicker across those cliffs.
