The Experience

The boat leaves Benagil Beach and heads into the cave system immediately. You'll pass through the famous Benagil Cave—the largest and most recognizable of the group—then move along to Praia da Marinha and the Carvoeiro area beaches, where the rock formations narrow and the water runs clear. The route covers roughly 20 caves in total, each one a different shape and size, some with sand floors and some open only at certain tides.

A qualified skipper handles the boat while a live guide narrates in your choice of English, Spanish, Portuguese or French. Life jackets and safety gear are provided and required. Infants sit on an adult's lap; the tour is not recommended for people with back problems, heart conditions or serious illnesses, and pregnant women should check with their doctor first. The whole outing runs about an hour, which is long enough to see the main attractions without the day becoming a boat ride.

You board and land at Benagil Beach itself, so there's no separate transfer or shuttle involved. The caves are only accessible by water, which is why this tour exists—you can't walk to them or see them from the cliffs above.
