The Experience

"You see that little hole up there? Locals call it ‘the eye’," our guide João grinned as the boat drifted into the Benagil Cave. It was cooler inside than I expected — damp sandstone under my fingers, echoey with everyone’s quiet awe. I caught a whiff of salt and sunscreen. João kept pointing out shapes in the rock — a crocodile here, a heart there — and honestly, I only saw half of them but it made me laugh anyway.

We’d left Portimão earlier that morning, the marina still waking up, fishing boats bobbing around us. The water was glassy for once (João said it’s not always like that), and our group was just eight people — enough to feel social but not crowded. There was this moment near Carvoeiro when dolphins showed up out of nowhere. Not promised on every Benagil Caves tour from Portimao, but they came close enough that you could hear their breath.
