The Experience

The sound hits you first: the engine cuts to a low rumble as the boat glides into the mouth of Benagil Cave, and suddenly the rock walls close in overhead. You're inside one of the Algarve's most photographed caves, and the light bouncing off the water and the stone makes it look less real than it should. The cave is massive—a cathedral carved by the sea—and you're floating right into the center of it. This is the moment most people come for, and it lands exactly as hard as the pictures promise.

Your day starts with a minivan pickup from your hotel in Lagos, then a short drive to Carvoeiro Beach where you board one of the traditional fishing boats for the main event: a 1 hour 15 minute coastal cruise that takes you past Benagil Cave, Marinha Beach, and several smaller sea caves tucked into the cliffs. The boat moves slowly enough that you can shoot photos without the boat rocking you off balance, and your guide points out the geology and the history as you go.
