The experience
The walk follows a coastal strip where the Algarve's geology is written into the cliffs. You'll see Praia da Marinha, ranked among the world's 100 best beaches by Michelin, and observe the arches, sinkholes and shallows that define karst terrain. Benagil Cave sits above the beach, visible from the clifftop vantage point rather than from the water, and Praia do Carvalho is reached through a tunnel carved into soft Miocene limestone. The rock face still holds the shells aggregated there over millennia.
The route is a linear walk of 6 km that takes roughly 3 hours, with a guide who can explain what you're standing in front of. You'll pass the Alfanzina Lighthouse, where Aleppo pine (one of the few trees hardy enough for these stony, arid lands) grows in a small forest. The pace is steady but not strenuous, and the group stays small, capped at 12 people. Return transfer is arranged as part of the booking, so you don't need to coordinate your own way back.

What is Benagil Cave like when you reach it on this hike?
Benagil Cave, known locally as Algar de Benagil, is one of the world's most beautiful sea caves. On this walk you view it from the clifftop above rather than from a boat, so you see inside the cave opening and the beach at its mouth where a narrow gully carved by a torrential river meets the sea.
