The experience
You arrive at Praia da Ingrina beach and meet your guide, a local ocean lover with more than 20 years of kayaking and diving experience. After a safety briefing, you climb into a stable kayak with a life vest and a waterproof bag for your belongings, then paddle out along the western coast. The route stays close to the cliffs and rock formations, moving slowly enough to spot sea life underwater and birds overhead. The caves themselves have a distinctive purple color, and your guide points out the mussels and famous goose barnacles (percebes) that grow on the rocks. You can reach out and touch them as you paddle past.
About halfway through, you reach Praia do Barranco, a small beach tucked into the coastline where you pull the kayaks ashore. This is your chance to swim, stretch, or simply rest on the sand before the paddle back to Ingrina. The whole trip takes 2.5 hours from start to finish. Because the area is part of a natural park and sits away from the main tourist routes, you won't be competing with other boats or crowds: the water stays quiet and the focus stays on what you're seeing.
When you return to Praia da Ingrina, the restaurant Sebastião sits right at the beach if you want to grab fresh food or a drink and keep the afternoon going.
