Limestone caves and seabird colonies from inside a double kayak

Kayak the Algarve coast from Salema beach in a double kayak with a certified guide, paddling into sea caves and along imposing limestone cliffs in the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The experience runs three hours total: a boat ride to João Vaz beach, then an hour and a half paddling in the caves. Two guides lead every departure, and life jackets plus civil liability insurance are included.

The experience

The day starts at Salema beach, where you board a main boat for a coastal run to João Vaz beach. This boat leg gives you a first look at the cliffs and the seabirds that nest in them before you transfer into a double kayak. The kayak portion lasts an hour and a half, and that is where the caves open up. You paddle into them, not past them, and the guide points out the different species working the cliff faces above.

Two certified guides run every trip, and they speak English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group. You sit in a double kayak, which means no solo paddling experience is required. The guide handles the technical parts and the navigation. Life jackets are mandatory and provided. The whole outing (boat ride, kayak time, the caves) takes three hours from start to finish.

The Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park is a protected coastline, and this company holds the unique permit to run kayak tours inside it. Bring flip-flops, shorts, a light coat, water and sunscreen. The sun reflects hard off the water and the limestone. Public transportation reaches Salema beach if you don't have a car.

Is this one for you?Three hours is short enough to fit around other activities in the Algarve, but long enough to paddle into the caves and see the cliffs properly. If you need a full-day commitment or want to combine kayaking with a longer coastal exploration, look for a different option.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly do I paddle in? Is it a solo kayak or a tandem?

Double kayaks seat two people, so you share the paddling with a guide or another paddler. The guide steers and handles navigation while you paddle alongside.

Are the caves actually swimmable, or do we just paddle past them?

You paddle into the caves themselves during the hour-and-a-half kayak portion. The guide takes you inside to see the formations and the seabirds nesting in the cliff walls.

How much paddling experience do I need?

No experience is required. You sit in a double kayak with a certified guide who manages the technical paddling and steering. You contribute to the pace but the guide controls direction and safety.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

Life jackets, double kayaks and civil liability insurance are all included. Bring flip-flops, shorts, a light coat, water and sunscreen. The sun is intense off the water.

How long is the whole thing, and when do I get back?

The full experience is three hours: a boat ride to João Vaz beach, then an hour and a half in the kayaks exploring the caves. Plan for three hours total from Salema beach.
