Benagil Cave Boat Tour from Portimão: 1.5-hour marine caves
Benagil and Marinha caves from the water, not the crowded clifftop paths
A 1.5-hour boat tour departing from Portimão Marina reaches Benagil, Marinha and smaller sea caves along the Algarve coast with a live guide speaking Portuguese, English, Spanish or French. You travel by boat from the marina, pass through rock formations and into cave interiors, and return to the same departure point. The tour accesses remote coves away from the busiest tourist areas.
Step-by-step itinerary
Boat tour to Benagil and Marinha caves
- Depart from Marina de Portimão
- Enjoy 90-minute boat tour
- Visit Benagil Cave
- Visit Marinha Cave
- Listen to onboard commentary and safety briefing
- Return to Marina de Portimão
The experience
The boat leaves Portimão Marina at Estrada Marina 271 and heads along the coast toward Benagil Cave, the largest sea cave in Europe. You enter by water, which means you see the cave's cathedral-like interior and the natural light shaft from above: views the clifftop paths cannot reach. The route also passes Marinha and several smaller caves carved into the red and golden rock face, each one visible from the water in a way that makes the geology of the Algarve coast readable as you move through it.
The tour runs about 90 minutes total, including on-board safety briefing and live commentary from the guide. Staff speak Portuguese, English, Spanish and French, so the explanation of what you're seeing happens in your language. The boat returns to the same marina where it started, so there's no second pickup or drop-off to arrange.
Children travel free when accompanied by an adult, and specialized infant seats are available if you're bringing a baby. The boat does move through open water and into caves, so it's not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy, but it is fine for all other fitness levels and for families with kids old enough to sit safely on a moving boat.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 16 years); Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Benagil Cave like when you get there by boat?
Benagil is a massive sea cave with a sand beach inside and a natural opening in the roof that lets light flood the chamber. Approaching by water lets you see the full scale of the interior and the geological layers in the rock walls. The cave is roughly 100 meters across and tall enough that the ceiling disappears into shadow.
Can I book this tour if I'm staying in a different part of the Algarve?
The tour departs from Portimão Marina, and public transportation options are available nearby the marina address. If you're staying elsewhere in the region, you'll need to arrange your own way to the marina or check whether the operator offers hotel pickup as an add-on option at checkout.
What does the guide actually explain during the tour?
The guide provides on-board commentary about the caves, the rock formations and the marine environment as the boat moves along the coast. The commentary is live and happens in your chosen language (Portuguese, English, Spanish or French), so you hear explanations of what you're seeing in real time.
Are there stops where you get out and walk around?
This is a boat tour, so you remain on the boat throughout the 90 minutes. You see the caves and rock formations from the water, and the boat passes through or near several cave openings, but you do not disembark to explore on foot.
What should I bring or wear for this tour?
Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet from sea spray, and bring sunscreen and a hat or cap. You're on the water with little shade. Food and drinks are not included, so bring water and any snacks you want. The tour operates in open water, so it can be choppy on windy days.
