The Experience

You arrive at Benagil Beach for a morning or afternoon departure. After a briefing and fitting your lifevest, you push off with the guide and the group—never more than 12 paddlers—heading straight for the sea caves. The paddle itself is the point: you're not riding to a viewpoint, you're moving through the water toward the rock formations that only open from the sea. The Algar de Benagil is a sea cave you can only reach by kayak or boat, and kayaking puts you in control of the pace and the angle.

Once inside the cave, you stop paddling and swim. The water is clear enough to see the rock face underwater, and the cave ceiling rises above you—it's the kind of space that photographs differently from every angle. You can float, dive, or stay in the kayak; the guide is there to help with whatever you want to do.
