The Experience

The first thing I remember is the slap of salty air as we stepped onto the catamaran in Albufeira. There was this low hum of Portuguese chatter — a couple of locals, some families, one guy with a camera bigger than his head. Our guide, Marta, handed me a tiny glass of something sweet (I think it was medronho?) before we even left the dock. She grinned and said, “For courage!” which made me laugh because the sea looked totally calm. But you never know.

We drifted west along the coast, past Falésia Beach and those crazy red cliffs — honestly, they look painted on some days. The boat slowed at São Rafael Beach so Marta could point out these weird rock arches that look like dinosaur bones if you squint. I tried to say “Praia da Galé” with the right accent and got a thumbs up from João at the bar (probably just being polite). The sun kept flickering through clouds and every now and then you’d catch this whiff of sunscreen mixed with something sugary from the galley below.

I didn’t expect to care much about caves but when we reached Benagil Cave itself — well, it’s hard not to stare up at that round ceiling with sunlight pouring through like a spotlight. We couldn’t always go inside (Marta warned us sometimes the authorities close it off) but even just floating nearby felt kind of surreal. Someone passed around little cakes dusted in sugar; I still think about those. And yeah, there was time for a swim if you wanted — cold enough to wake you up fast. After that everything felt brighter somehow.

On the way back we stopped near Submarine Rock and Arco do Triunfo — Marta told stories about shipwrecks that sounded half-true, half-legend. You could see birds circling over Birds Cave and kids waving from Praia da Marinha. It wasn’t a fancy day but it stuck with me; maybe it was just all that light on water or how everyone loosened up after the tastings. Anyway, I’d do it again just for that feeling when you step off sunburned and happy.
