Women cannot enter the temples during menstruation, and the village itself bans vehicles entirely.

This private tour visits Besakih Temple, Bali's largest, perched on Mount Agung's slope with views of the volcano; Kehen Temple, built in the 13th century; Penglipuran Village, Indonesia's cleanest village where no cars are allowed; and Tukad Cepung, a hidden waterfall tucked under a cave. Your driver-guide speaks English, handles photography, and arranges hotel pickup and drop-off. The day runs 8 to 10 hours and includes lunch, entrance fees, a traditional sarong for temple entry, and an air-conditioned vehicle. Menstruating women are not permitted to enter temples; travelers should have moderate fitness and are not advised if pregnant or dealing with spinal or cardiovascular concerns.

  • Explore Penglipuran village
  • Walk through bamboo forest
  • Visit Kehen Temple
  • Tour Besakih Temple

The Experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and heads to Penglipuran Village in Bangli district, home to 1,112 people and known as Indonesia's cleanest village. No cars or motorcycles are allowed inside—you walk the streets on foot, seeing how the community maintains its traditional layout and daily life. Just north of the village stands a bamboo forest where the trees are harvested to build houses, ceremonial tools and crafts, giving a sense of how the landscape directly shapes what people make.

From there you move to Kehen Temple, the second-largest temple in Bali, built in the 13th century and still quiet compared to other major sites. An ancient banyan tree anchors the grounds. Then comes the main event: Besakih Temple, the biggest temple in Bali, built by the highest priest Markandya on the slope of Mount Agung volcano. Your guide walks you through the temple complex, and the view of the volcano from the temple grounds is the centerpiece of the day. You'll wear a traditional Balinese sarong provided for you, and entrance fees are covered.

The day ends at Tukad Cepung, a waterfall hidden beneath a cliff and cave—unique because you reach it by wading through water. Bring a swimsuit and water shoes or sandals. Lunch is included, and your driver-guide handles the route, timing and any photography you want along the way. The whole experience runs between 8 and 10 hours, with all transport in an air-conditioned vehicle.
