The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your driver-guide speaks English and handles the route, so you skip the coordination of getting to each site. The first stop is Kanto Lampo Waterfall in Beng village: a 15-meter cascade that flows over wide, step-like lava rock formations, which is why it photographs so distinctly. From there you head north to Ulu Petanu Waterfall in Kedisan village, a vertical 15-meter drop set deep inside rainforest, a different shape and setting from the first one.

Next is Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple, a Hindu complex dedicated to Dewa Wisnu with clear pools and green surroundings. A traditional Balinese sarong is provided so you can enter. After the temple comes the jungle swing experience, set up in a lush spot where you can see out over the landscape. Lunch follows at a spot with a view of the rice paddies, so you eat while looking at the next stop. Then you walk through Tegalalang Rice Terrace, the famous stepped paddies that use the subak, Bali's traditional cooperative irrigation system. The driver-guide has mobile photography skills, so if you want help framing shots, that's part of the service.

Entrance fees to the waterfall sites, temple and terrace are all covered, as is the bottle of water you get during the day. The vehicle is private, so the pace is yours. You can spend longer at any stop or move through faster. Pickup and drop-off at your hotel bookend the day, which runs between 8 and 10 hours depending on how long you linger at each place.
