The Experience
Hands gripping a bamboo rail, I peered over the edge—water roaring somewhere below. Our driver, Wayan, just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, it’s not slippery today.” He was right; my feet sank into cool mud as we climbed down to Kanto Lampo Waterfall. The air felt thick and sweet—like wet leaves and river stones. I let the spray hit my face. It was louder than I expected, almost like standing next to a train for a second. Wayan offered to take our photo but honestly, I just wanted to watch local kids laughing as they tried to balance on rocks.
After that rush of water and noise, the Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple felt like another world—quiet except for the soft splash of koi in those clear pools. They gave us sarongs at the entrance (mine kept slipping), and Wayan explained how people come here for blessings. He pointed out carvings I’d have missed—tiny faces half-hidden by moss. The incense made everything smell faintly sweet and smoky. A woman in a bright sash smiled at us when we passed; I tried saying “terima kasih” but probably mangled it.
Lunch was up above the jungle, with cicadas buzzing and something frying in coconut oil drifting from the kitchen. We watched people swinging out over the trees—some screamed, some just closed their eyes. My turn came and my heart thumped so loud I thought everyone could hear it. It’s hard to explain what you see from up there—rice paddies folding out in green waves all around Ubud, little scarecrows flapping in the wind. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
The last stop was Tegalalang Rice Terrace—a patchwork of green steps cut into the hillside. Sunlight caught on water channels between rows of rice plants. Local farmers waved as we passed; one had a radio clipped to his belt playing gamelan music crackling through static. We didn’t rush—just followed narrow paths until my shoes were caked with red earth.
