The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the hush on the lake—just the boat engine and a couple of birds somewhere in the mist. Our guide Wayan handed me a life jacket and grinned, “You’ll see something different today.” He wasn’t kidding. Trunyan Village sits right at Lake Batur’s edge, and even before we landed, you could feel this place had its own rules. The air smelled faintly woody, almost sweet, from the Taru Menyan tree. We walked to the cemetery where the Bali Aga lay their dead out under that tree—no cremation, just nature doing its thing. It sounds grim but honestly? It felt peaceful. Wayan explained how the tree absorbs any bad smells. I tried not to stare too long at the woven bamboo cages resting over bones; it was respectful silence, not morbid curiosity.

Afterwards, we crossed back over the water—my hands still cold from gripping the boat rail—and drove up to Batur Natural Hot Spring. I didn’t expect to laugh so much here; maybe it was relief after Trunyan or just how good that first dip felt on my skin. The pool was steamy and there was this mineral tang in the air (and on my lips). Some local families were splashing around too, chatting in Balinese while steam curled up around us all. I let myself float for a bit and watched clouds drift over Mount Batur across the lake. My shoulders finally unclenched.

Penglipuran Village came next—a world away from Trunyan but somehow connected by old traditions. The main street is lined with neat stone gates and gardens; people here really do greet you with a nod or a shy smile as you pass by their doorways. Our guide pointed out how every house faces exactly the same direction for harmony (I tried to remember which way north was but got distracted by a kid flying a kite). Walking those quiet lanes felt like stepping into someone’s family album.

Last stop: Tibumana Waterfall—not far from Ubud but it feels hidden behind thick green walls of bamboo and vines. The water drops straight down into a wide pool; it’s loud enough to drown out your thoughts if you stand close enough (which I did). I dipped my toes in—freezing!—and just sat there listening for a while before we headed back toward town, tired but weirdly light inside. Even now I still think about that hush by Lake Batur at the start of it all.
