The Experience
“You ever tried breathing through a snorkel before?” our guide Wayan asked, grinning as he handed me the mask. I’ll admit—I was nervous. The water at Blue Lagoon near Padangbai looked so clear it almost didn’t seem real, just this soft blue glass. There was a faint salty smell, and the sound of the little wooden boats bumping together. We slid into the water and suddenly there were these flashes of color everywhere—tiny angelfish darting around my legs, clownfish hiding in coral. I kept forgetting to breathe slowly. Wayan kept an eye on us the whole time, pointing out puffer fish (they look way less cute up close) and even a moray eel poking out from a rock. My sister tried to say “thank you” in Bahasa and totally butchered it—Wayan just laughed.
After snorkeling, we dried off and had lunch—simple grilled fish with rice that tasted way better than I expected (maybe saltwater makes you hungry). The drive to Kanto Lampo Waterfall was bumpy but kind of fun; you see bits of everyday Bali out the window—kids playing soccer barefoot, women balancing baskets on their heads. At Kanto Lampo, the air changed—it got cooler and smelled like wet stone and moss. The waterfall isn’t huge but it fans out over these black rocks so people climb up for photos. I slipped once and got soaked—everyone laughed, including some locals who’d come just for a swim.
Tibumana Waterfall was quieter, almost hidden behind thick green leaves. You walk down these steps cut into the hillside, hearing nothing but water and birds. There’s this pool at the bottom where the light turns everything greenish-blue. It felt peaceful in a way I didn’t expect—I just sat for a minute watching sunlight flicker on the surface. On the ride back to our hotel (the air-con felt amazing by then), I kept thinking about that underwater silence at Blue Lagoon and how different it all felt from busy Seminyak or Kuta Beach.
