The Experience

There was this soft clacking of bamboo as our jukung boat rocked against the dock at Padangbai — I remember thinking how narrow it looked, but our skipper just grinned and waved us on. The sun was already up, but not too hot yet, and you could smell salt and something sweet from the little warungs nearby. I fumbled with my mask (classic) while our guide Ketut explained where we’d go first: Blue Lagoon, then Tanjung Jepun. He said both spots had their own “personality,” which made me laugh — but he was right.

We slid into the water at Blue Lagoon and it felt cooler than I expected — almost like a wake-up call. There were flashes of electric blue fish darting around coral that looked like old stone castles. At one point Ketut pointed out a Napoleon wrasse (I’d never heard of it before), and then a clownfish that actually peeked out at us. I tried to say its name in Bahasa but just got a big grin from Ketut. The bay stayed pretty calm, even when another group arrived; you could still hear the soft engine hums from fishing boats drifting past.

Tanjung Jepun had different colors — more yellows and purples in the coral, or maybe I was just noticing more because I’d finally stopped fussing with my snorkel. We saw a moray eel tucked under a rock, and someone in our group swore they spotted a tiny octopus (I missed it). Afterward we climbed back onto the jukung, dripping everywhere, and Ketut handed out towels and laughed about how clumsy we all looked getting back in. Lunch was simple nasi goreng eaten on the beach — tasted better than any fancy meal because we were all salty and tired. I still think about that view across the bay while eating rice with my fingers.
