The Experience

We’d barely left Ubud when our driver, Wayan, turned around and grinned — “You want music or just the sound of the road?” Honestly, I was still half-asleep but the morning air through the window smelled like wet rice fields and incense. The drive out to Lempuyang Temple is longer than I thought (it’s a good two hours from central Bali), but time sort of melts away when you’re watching scooters zip by and hearing Wayan’s stories about his grandmother’s offerings. He handed us bottled water before we even asked — small thing, but it felt thoughtful.

Lempuyang Temple itself… well, everyone lines up for that photo at “The Gate.” We waited our turn and tried to get the clouds to cooperate (they didn’t), but honestly I liked wandering the steps more. There was a breeze that carried frangipani petals across the stones. Wayan showed us how to tie the sarong properly — he laughed when mine fell off halfway up. After that, we headed down winding roads to Tirta Gangga Water Garden. It’s quieter than I expected; koi fish everywhere and kids giggling as they hopped between stones. The air smelled faintly sweet and mossy. I dipped my hand in the water just because I could.

Lunch was somewhere roadside — nothing fancy, just grilled chicken and sambal that nearly blew my head off (Wayan said “not spicy” but I’m not sure he believes in mild). Afterward we stopped at Asah Hill for this wild view over East Bali’s coastline — it looked electric blue under a patchy sky. Then Virgin Beach: white sand, hardly anyone else there except a couple locals fixing nets. The sea was louder than I expected. We just sat there for a while, toes buried in cool sand, not really talking much. Sometimes you don’t need to.
