The Experience

“If you want the photo, patience is your ticket,” our guide Wayan grinned as we shuffled closer to the Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple. He’d already shown us how to tie our sarongs (mine kept slipping), and told us about the mountain spirits watching over this place. The wait was longer than I expected—over an hour—but somehow it didn’t bother me. Balinese families chatted quietly behind us, and a breeze carried incense from somewhere up the hill. When my turn finally came, Wayan did that mirror trick with his phone for the famous reflection shot. I felt a bit silly posing but also weirdly proud when I saw Mount Agung framed behind me.

Earlier that morning we’d squeezed into the van just after sunrise—hotel pickup was right on time—and headed out from Ubud. Goa Raja Waterfall was first. It’s tucked away in a rocky cave; you can hear water echoing before you see anything. There was this cool patch of sunlight slanting through a hole in the roof, lighting up mist and mossy stones. I dipped my toes in (freezing!) while another traveler tried to get that perfect moody shot for Instagram. Honestly, it smelled like wet leaves and river stone—kind of earthy and clean at once.

Tirta Gangga came last: old royal water gardens with carved stone lilypads and koi everywhere. Kids were feeding fish bits of bread by hand (I tried too—slippery little guys). The whole place felt peaceful but alive, with temple bells ringing somewhere nearby and gardeners trimming hedges in slow circles. Wayan pointed out some Hindu statues I’d totally missed, explaining their stories without sounding like a textbook. By then my feet were tired but I didn’t really want to leave yet—you know that feeling?
