The Experience

Your driver picks you up from your Kuta hotel in the early morning and the drive north takes you through Bali's interior toward Ubud. The first stop is the Barong and Keris dance performance, a traditional Balinese story told through movement and music about the eternal fight between good and evil — Barong the king of spirits against Rangda. The dancers move with precision and humor woven in, and afterward you can stand for photos with them. After that, you head to Celuk Village, where gold and silver craftspeople have worked for generations. The shops line both sides of the road like a jewelry exhibition, and you can watch artisans shape silver by hand or commission a custom piece if something catches your eye.

Then comes the Ubud Monkey Forest, a small rainforest sanctuary in the heart of Ubud village where tame monkeys move through the canopy and temple ruins sit half-hidden among the trees. The air is cool and damp, and the forest feels separate from the town even though it's steps away. After that, you drive uphill to Kintamani, which sits at 1,500 meters and has a climate suited to growing oranges and passion fruit. At a restaurant there, you eat a buffet lunch of Indonesian food — vegetarian options are available — while looking out at Mount Batur and the black volcanic rock surrounding Lake Batur. The view is the reason people make the drive up.

The afternoon takes you to Tegalalang Rice Terrace, where the paddies are cut into the hillside in neat, stacked rows with coconut trees scattered between them. It's one of Ubud's most photographed spots, and you can see why — the geometry of the terraces and the green of the rice create a landscape that feels both cultivated and wild. Your last stop is Tirta Empul Temple, a Hindu shrine built around a sacred spring where Balinese worshippers have come for centuries to bathe in the holy water and perform purification rituals. The temple has pools fed by the spring, and the water is believed to cleanse the body and soul of negative things. After that, your driver takes you back to Kuta, arriving in the evening.
