The experience

“Don’t worry, I’ve done this more than 700 times,” our guide Wayan grinned as he handed me a flashlight at the Mount Batur base. It was 3:45am and honestly, I was still half-asleep. The air smelled faintly of damp earth and clove cigarettes from the drivers waiting nearby. We started climbing, just three of us plus Wayan’s easy laughter echoing somewhere ahead. My shoes kept slipping on loose gravel. He joked that Bali’s volcano likes to test you before it lets you see the sunrise.

I didn’t expect how cold it would feel up there. The wind bit through my jacket as we reached the top just before 6am.
