The experience

We almost missed our driver at the port: my name was spelled just a little off on the sign (I smiled anyway), but he spotted us waving. That’s how our private Bali shore excursion started, not exactly smooth but somehow just right for a place where nothing feels rushed. Our driver, Wayan, asked what we wanted to see and scribbled notes while I tried to pronounce “Tegalalang” (he grinned and told me it’s easier if you don’t overthink it). The air in the van was cool compared to outside, where the smell of incense and clove cigarettes drifted in every time we stopped.

First stop: Mas Village. We watched a carver chip away at a block of wood with hands that moved so fast I couldn’t keep up. The shavings fell onto his bare feet and he laughed when I asked if it tickled. At Batuan Temple, Wayan handed us sarongs and explained which gods were honored there: his voice dropped low as we stepped inside, out of respect I think. The stone felt cool under my hand. I didn’t expect to feel so quiet in such a busy place.

Tegenungan Waterfall was loud (the kind of sound that fills your chest), and there were kids splashing at the edge while tourists tried not to slip on the wet rocks. Later, at Tegalalang Rice Terrace, everything slowed down again. Green everywhere, layered like steps into another world. We bought coconuts from a woman who barely looked up from her phone but smiled when she handed them over. That taste (cold and sweet after walking in the heat). I still think about it.

We ended at Tanah Lot Temple as sunset started creeping in (not quite golden hour yet). There were crowds but somehow it didn’t matter. Everyone just sort of paused together as the waves hit the rocks below. Wayan waited patiently by the van while we lingered too long taking photos that probably won’t do it justice anyway.
