The experience

If you've just arrived in Bali or have a free afternoon and no rental car, this private tour collects the main sights around Ubud in a single day. You get picked up from your hotel and driven to Tegenungan Waterfall first, where the river runs through green forest and you can swim or take photos depending on the water level and your mood. The waterfall sits in a small gorge with enough space to wade in or just stand in the mist.

The second stop is Ubud Monkey Forest, where over 600 long-tailed monkeys live among the trees and temple ruins. You walk through the forest on marked paths. It's small enough to cover in an hour but dense enough to feel like you've left the town behind. After that comes Ubud Art Market and a short visit to Ubud Palace, which sits directly across from the market. The market is where locals and tourists bargain over textiles, carvings and souvenirs. The palace is where the king of Ubud lived and is still used for royal ceremonies. You can shop or just watch the crowd and the energy of the place.

The final stop is Tanah Lot Temple, a temple built on a rocky outcrop surrounded by ocean. You arrive in time to watch the sunset from the temple grounds or nearby viewpoints. The temple is one of Bali's most photographed sites, and the light on the water in the late afternoon is why. Nearby you may also visit Batu Bolong Temple and Batu Mejan if time allows. Your driver brings you back to your hotel after dark.
