The experience

The day starts with a two-hour drive to Bali Butterfly Park in Tabanan, where you spend 45 minutes walking through acres of landscaped gardens to watch rare and endemic butterfly species. From there, it's another hour north to Ulun Danu Temple, which sits on a small promontory of Lake Beratan in the mountain resort town of Bedugul. You'll have an hour and a half here, including lunch at the temple grounds. The temple itself is dedicated to Danu, the Goddess of Waters, and the setting on the lake is the main draw.

After lunch, a 30-minute drive takes you north along winding roads to Gitgit Waterfalls. A short walk through jungle canopy leads to the falls, where you stay for 45 minutes. On the return journey, you stop at Jatiluwih rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for 75 minutes to take in the views before the final two-hour drive back to your hotel. The whole day runs about ten hours from pickup to drop-off.
