The Experience

We were already bouncing along the dark, bumpy road when I realized how glad I was not to be hiking at 3am. The jeep’s headlights caught little clouds of dust and, honestly, I was still half asleep when our guide Wayan handed me a thermos of sweet Balinese coffee. He grinned and said something about “volcano energy”—I just nodded, watching the first hint of orange creep behind Mount Batur. The air smelled like cool earth and exhaust, which sounds weird but felt right for this kind of morning.

The sunrise itself… well, it’s hard to explain. We parked on this ridge where you could see Lake Batur down below and the sky just kept changing colors every few minutes.
