The experience

You're picked up from your Ubud hotel in the dark, usually between 3 and 4 a.m., and driven to Mount Batur's base in Kintamani. The jeep carries you up the ancient volcano's slopes while the valley is still black, and you arrive at the summit before sunrise. A local, licensed guide leads the way across the crater rim, where the light begins to shift. Breakfast (bread, eggs, banana, water and hot drinks) waits at the top, and you eat while watching the sun clear the horizon and flood the volcanic landscape below.

From the summit you can see across the caldera to Batur Lake, Abang Mountain and Mount Agung in the distance. The guide points out the black lava fields that surround the lake: solidified basaltic lava from eruptions in 1963 and 1974, now a dark, porous landscape where moss and small plants are slowly reclaiming the rock. You trek across the crater rim for photographs and vistas, then descend the back side of the mountain through jungle to Toya Bungkah village before the drive back to your hotel.
