The experience
We were already bouncing along the dark trail in that old 4WD before my brain fully woke up: our driver, Wayan, grinned in the rearview mirror like he’d done this a thousand times (he probably has). The air up here near Mount Batur was chilly, almost sharp, and I could smell something earthy, like wet stone or maybe ash? We stopped halfway up so Wayan could point out the faint orange line on the horizon. He handed us hot tea in little paper cups, steam curling around our fingers while we waited for the sun to show itself. I didn’t expect it to feel so quiet up there, except for someone’s laugh echoing from another jeep down the ridge.
After sunrise (which really does sneak up on you), we rattled off towards the black lava field. The ground changed suddenly: crunchy underfoot when I hopped out, almost like walking on burnt toast. Wayan told us about his uncle who remembered the last big eruption. He pointed out where the old village used to be. It’s strange seeing something so harsh look kind of beautiful in that morning light. My shoes got dusty and I kept finding little bits of black rock in my pockets later, souvenirs, I guess?
The last stop was AKASA Kintamani Cafe. By then I was starving and honestly just wanted coffee. The view from their patio is wild: clouds drifting below you, Mount Batur still steaming a little in the distance. People at other tables were chatting quietly or just staring at their phones.
