The Experience

I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect to feel cold in Bali, but there we were, bouncing up Mount Batur in the dark with the windows cracked open and the air biting at my cheeks. Our driver, Wayan, laughed when I shivered and handed me a thermos of sweet tea. The jeep rattled over rocks as we climbed higher. I kept thinking: so this is what sunrise on a volcano feels like — a little wild, kind of surreal.

We reached the lookout just as the sky started turning that weird blue-grey before dawn. There were maybe four other jeeps scattered around. People huddled close, trading sleepy smiles. Wayan unpacked a simple breakfast — hard-boiled eggs still warm from his pocket, some bread, bananas. It tasted better than it should have with that view opening up: Lake Batur below us, steam rising off the black lava fields. I tried to take photos but honestly, they never do it justice. The sun came up fast and everything turned gold for about five minutes.

Afterwards we drove down through the black lava fields — sharp rocks everywhere, some of them still warm if you touched them (I did; probably not recommended). Wayan told us stories about the eruption in 1963 and pointed out where his uncle’s house used to stand before the lava came. The ground felt strange underfoot — kind of crunchy and soft at once. We stopped at a tiny coffee farm on the way back where I tried kopi Bali for the first time. Li laughed when I tried to say “terima kasih” properly; pretty sure I butchered it.

I still think about that morning sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic or scrolling through my phone too much. There was something about being up there with strangers and tea and volcanic dust on my shoes that made me feel awake in a way I hadn’t for ages.
