The Experience

Pickup happens between 1:30 and 3:00 am depending on where you're staying in Bali. Your driver collects you in a private air-conditioned car and takes you to the starting point, where your English-speaking guide runs through a safety briefing before the trek begins around 4:00 am. The walk to the summit takes roughly an hour and a half, and you'll have walking poles and a flashlight to help you navigate the dark slope of the active volcano.

You reach the top around 6:00 am as the sun rises over the caldera. Your guide serves hot tea or coffee and a plate of steamed eggs on the summit itself. From there, you can either head straight down to the car park or ask your guide to lead you around the crater rim to see the second crater (which erupted in 1926), the third (1963), and the youngest craters (1974 and 1994). The choice is yours depending on how much time and energy you want to spend at the top.

You descend and arrive at the bottom around 9:00 am. Breakfast waits at a restaurant with views across Lake Batur and back toward Mount Batur itself. The full return to your hotel is estimated between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Bring or request a warm jacket or wind breaker—the summit is cold before sunrise, and the operator provides these on request.
