The Experience

There’s this weird hush right before the sun comes up on Mount Batur — just the crunch of gravel under our boots and the low voices of other hikers, all bundled up in borrowed jackets. I kept thinking how different Bali felt at 3 am, climbing out of the car at Toya Bungkah. Our guide, Wayan, handed us torches that flickered against the dark trees. He grinned when I fumbled with mine — “Don’t worry, everyone’s clumsy at this hour.” It was colder than I expected; my breath made little clouds as we started the trek.

The climb took about two hours but time got strange in the dark. At one point I almost slipped on some loose gravel but caught myself. We reached the top just as a thin orange line split open the horizon over Lake Batur. Breakfast was simple: hard-boiled eggs and bananas cooked by volcanic steam. The eggs tasted oddly smoky, maybe it was just my imagination or maybe that’s what happens when your breakfast comes straight out of a volcano. Afterward he led us along the crater rim — wind tugging at my hat, views down into the caldera where white mist curled around black lava fields. Heading back down, legs shaky but happy, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once all morning. That view sticks with me more than any photo could.
