The experience

The day starts before dawn with pickup from your hotel in Bali. An air-conditioned car takes you to Toya Bungkah, the starting point on Mount Batur's lower slopes: chosen because it draws fewer trekkers than other routes and puts you on the mountain while the crowds are still asleep. A professional guide meets you there and hands you a torch and walking stick for the two-hour climb.

The trek itself is steady uphill in near-total darkness, following the slope as your torch picks out the path ahead. Once you reach the peak, the guide leads you to a quiet spot away from the main summit area, where you have space to stand and wait. As the sun breaks the horizon, you're standing above the crater with a view most visitors never get: the hillocks releasing jets of white steam from the volcanic vents below. Before the light fully arrives, the guide serves hot tea or coffee and breakfast: hard-boiled eggs and bananas cooked by the volcanic steam on the way up, plus fresh fruit and chocolate. The descent follows the crater rim, giving you a different angle on the mountain as you walk back down.

By 8:30 a.m. you're back in the car heading to your hotel, the whole experience finished in time for the rest of your day. The eight-hour window includes the drive, the trek, breakfast and the return journey.
