The experience

How do you fit four famous Bali photo spots into one day without spending it in a car? This tour does it by starting early at Lempuyang Temple, perched on a hilltop in East Bali's Karangasem district. The temple itself is a working Hindu shrine. The Gate of Heaven is the ornamental gate tourists photograph with Mount Agung rising behind it. The water is spring-fed and clear, and the view from the top carries across the whole eastern region.

From there the route moves to Tirta Gangga Park, a royal water palace built centuries ago as a bathing place for the Karangasem royal family. The large central pond is fed by natural springs, and you can see koi moving through the water. The palace grounds are designed with enough open space and stone work that the place reads as a single composed photograph rather than a crowded tourist site. The swing comes next: Bali Swing is a newer activity, a series of rope swings hung in the forest canopy with views down into the rice terraces below. Multiple photo spots are set up around the swing area. Last is Tegalalang Rice Terrace, the tiered rice fields outside Ubud that most travelers stop at on the way between the north and central parts of the island. The paddies are cut into the hillside in neat horizontal lines, and the scale of them is what makes the landscape work.
