The Experience

Right after breakfast, our driver met us at the hotel—sharp at 9 am, which I appreciated since Delhi mornings can get busy fast. The air was already buzzing with the city’s energy as we headed straight for Old Delhi. The first stop, Jama Masjid, felt alive with the echo of morning prayers and the distant clang of rickshaw bells. Our guide, Rakesh, knew every shortcut through the maze of Chandni Chowk. He pointed out a chai stall that’s been there since his childhood—couldn’t resist grabbing a quick cup. The spice market, Khari Baoli, hit me with a wave of chili and cardamom scents so strong my eyes watered. It’s noisy, crowded, but honestly, that’s the charm. Rakesh showed us a rooftop view over the market—never would’ve found that on my own.

After weaving through the chaos, we drove to Gandhi Smriti. It’s quieter here, almost heavy with history. Walking through the rooms where Gandhi spent his last days, you can see his simple belongings—his glasses, a spinning wheel. The guide shared stories about the freedom movement that aren’t in most guidebooks. Next up was Humayun’s Tomb. The gardens were surprisingly peaceful, with parakeets darting around the red sandstone arches. Our guide explained how this place inspired the Taj Mahal—never realized that before.

We grabbed a quick lunch (I recommend trying the local thali if you’re hungry), then continued to the Lotus Temple. The building really does look like a giant white lotus from up close. Inside, it’s cool and quiet—no photos allowed, so you just sit and listen to the silence. We drove past India Gate and the President’s Estate—lots of photo ops here, especially with the tricolor flags waving in the breeze. Last stop was Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. The sound of hymns and the smell of fresh bread from the community kitchen made it feel welcoming. We even peeked inside the kitchen where volunteers were rolling out chapatis for lunch. It’s open to everyone, no matter where you’re from.
