The Experience

The first thing I remember is the color—everywhere, all at once. Our guide, Ankit, waved us over outside Jama Masjid and handed me a scarf (I’d forgotten mine), then led us through the mosque’s huge stone courtyard. Pigeons flapped overhead. I could smell incense and something fried drifting in from the street. Ankit told us five thousand workers built this place—he said it like he was still amazed by it himself.

We crammed into a tuk-tuk near Sunheri Masjid (my knees definitely touched someone else’s) and rattled straight into Chandni Chowk. The noise was wild—horns, vendors yelling in Hindi, bells from cycle rickshaws—and somehow our guide kept talking calmly about how these bazaars feed half the city. At Khari Baoli spice market I sneezed so hard I nearly dropped my phone; the air was thick with cumin and cardamom. Ankit laughed and handed me a tissue without missing a beat.

We only saw the Red Fort from outside—Ankit explained most of it belongs to the army now—but even just standing there you feel how old everything is. Later we drove past India Gate and Parliament House; honestly, I barely heard the history because I was watching families picnic on the lawns. Humayun’s Tomb felt cooler, quieter—a relief after Old Delhi’s crush. There were parakeets darting between arches, and for a second it almost felt peaceful.

The Lotus Temple came last for us—a white marble flower against dusty sky. Shoes off inside, cool floor underfoot. I tried to sit quietly but my mind kept replaying that tuk-tuk ride through Old Delhi… It’s funny what sticks with you.
