The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about diving into Delhi—there’s just so much going on. I tried to count all the colors in Chandni Chowk but gave up after about five minutes—too many saris, too many shop signs, too much life everywhere you look.

Jama Masjid felt huge but strangely peaceful inside; people moved quietly across the red sandstone courtyard while pigeons fluttered overhead. Ankit pointed out where Shah Jahan would have entered—he always had a random fact or two up his sleeve. At Khari Baoli spice market, I sneezed three times in a row (cumin? chili?) and an old shopkeeper grinned at me like it happened to everyone. The Red Fort loomed nearby, its walls stretching off into the haze—I still think about how small I felt standing there.

After that whirlwind of Old Delhi noise, we crossed into New Delhi—wider streets, sudden calm. India Gate was crowded but somehow dignified; families picnicking under trees, kids running around while names of soldiers watched from the stone above them. The Parliament House flashed by as we drove past (I barely got my camera out in time), then Humayun’s Tomb—a whole different kind of quiet. Our guide told us stories about Mughal emperors and secret gardens; honestly, I lost track of which ruler did what but didn’t really mind.

The Lotus Temple was our last stop—a white shape against the sky, people sitting outside just breathing it all in. By then my feet hurt but I didn’t care; there was something about seeing so many sides of Delhi in one day that left me both tired and oddly content. Oh—and if you’re wondering: yes, they drop you off wherever you want at the end (I chose a café for chai). Still thinking about those tuk tuks.
