The experience

Your driver picks you up from your hotel anywhere in Delhi NCR and brings your guide to meet you before the tour starts. The morning moves through Old Delhi in a tuk-tuk (the vehicle itself is part of the experience) winding through lanes to reach Jama Masjid, where you walk the red sandstone courtyard built in 1656 by 5,000 workers. The Red Fort sits directly across from it, a massive Mughal structure with walls stretching 2km. The Indo-Islamic architecture tells the story of Shah Jahan's reign. From there you move into Khari Baoli, the spice market in Chandni Chowk, where the sensory overload is deliberate: your guide walks you through the uses and properties of the spices stacked in every direction.

The afternoon shifts to New Delhi's political and spiritual landmarks. You pass India Gate (the 1921 memorial to 13,300 Indian servicemen from World War I), drive past Parliament House, and stop at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, where a water tank from 1664 still stands: the eighth Sikh Guru distributed water from it during a smallpox and cholera epidemic, and it's believed to hold medicinal properties. Then comes Qutub Minar, the tallest minaret built in 1192 and part of a UNESCO complex in Mehrauli. You choose between Humayun's Tomb (the first garden tomb in India) or Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, which despite being built in 2005 carries the architectural weight of centuries. The tour ends at the Lotus Temple, a Bahá'í House of Worship shaped like a flower and dedicated in 1986. Your driver drops you off anywhere in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad or Faridabad.

The private format means only your group travels together. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, French or German. Water bottles and umbrellas are provided. If you choose the option with entrance fees included, tickets to all monuments are covered. If you choose the car-and-guide option, you pay for tickets at each stop.
