The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the smell—cardamom, exhaust, something frying—and then our guide waving from the crowd outside Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib. We squeezed into a tuk-tuk and rattled straight into Chandni Chowk. It was loud, but not in a bad way. More like everyone had somewhere important to be. Our guide (Ravi) kept pointing out things I’d have missed: a man selling jalebi with orange-stained fingers, the faded blue sign above a spice shop that’s apparently older than my country. I tried to say “Khari Baoli” right—Ravi laughed and shook his head. The air tasted like chili and dust.
We wandered through Jama Masjid’s courtyard—bare feet on cool stone, pigeons flapping up in bursts. I didn’t expect to feel so small under those arches. Then the Red Fort’s walls came into view, just this endless red line against the sky. Somewhere between there and India Gate (which honestly looks even bigger up close), the city changed gears. Suddenly it was wide boulevards and Parliament House glinting behind iron gates. It felt like two different worlds stitched together by traffic and honking horns.
Lunch was quick—dal and flatbread at a spot Ravi picked near Humayun’s Tomb (I still think about that dal). The tomb itself is almost peaceful, if you ignore the crows. He told us stories about emperors and architects; I lost track of which was which but remembered how the sunlight hit the sandstone just right. We had to choose between Akshardham Temple or Humayun’s Tomb (you can’t do both unless you rush), so we lingered longer in the gardens instead.
By late afternoon we were at Qutub Minar—so many bricks stacked into something that shouldn’t still be standing after centuries, but there it is. The Lotus Temple was closed (it was Monday), so we circled Raj Ghat instead, where kids were chasing each other around Gandhi’s memorial in the fading light. Our driver dropped us back at our hotel just as my feet started complaining for real. Honestly, it’s a lot for one day—but I wouldn’t have wanted less.
