The experience

The tour runs four to eight hours depending on which sites you choose and how long you spend at each one. Your driver picks you up from your hotel, airport or train station and takes you to meet your guide, who speaks English, Spanish, French or Hindi. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water and WiFi on board, and the guide shapes the day around your interests, whether you want the full sweep of both Old and New Delhi or focus on one side of the city.

The route typically includes Jama Masjid, one of India's largest mosques built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656; a rickshaw ride through the narrow, crowded lanes of Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, where spice markets and tiny shops selling oils and sweets line the streets; Red Fort, the sandstone fortress Shah Jahan built in 1648 when he moved the Mughal capital to Delhi; and Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose Persian-inspired architecture and marble inlays influenced the design of the Taj Mahal. You also see India Gate, the 42-meter sandstone arch war memorial completed in 1931, Qutub Minar in the Mehrauli area, and either Lotus Temple or Akshardham Temple depending on the day of the week and your choice. Lunch at a multi-cuisine restaurant is included, and the guide takes you to Gandhi Smriti, the memorial where Mahatma Gandhi spent his last 144 days, or Gurudwara Bangla Sahib with its holy pond.

At the end of the day, you get a complimentary drop-off anywhere in Delhi, or to the airport, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad or Faridabad. Entrance fees to the monuments are included if you book the all-inclusive option. If you choose a tour without tickets, you pay those separately at each site.
