The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — a kind of layered hum outside Jama Masjid, early but already busy. Our guide, Anil, handed me a scarf for my shoulders and grinned when I tried to say “salaam.” There was this smell of incense and something frying nearby, maybe samosas. Standing on the mosque steps, I could see rooftops tangled with wires and kites. It felt like the city was waking up all at once, not quietly either.

Chandni Chowk just swallowed us whole. Rickshaws weaving everywhere, people shouting prices I couldn’t follow, and that hit of spice from Khari Baoli — it actually made my eyes water (Anil laughed at me but handed over a tissue). Switching to New Delhi was weirdly calm after all that. Wide roads around India Gate and Parliament House felt almost empty by comparison. The air changed too — less dust somehow? At Gurudwara Bangla Sahib we slipped off our shoes; the marble was cool underfoot. Watching volunteers serve food in the langar kitchen made me oddly emotional (I’m not sure why — maybe just seeing so many people cared for). Later at Humayun’s Tomb, sunlight slid across red sandstone and I just stood there thinking about how old everything is here compared to home.

I didn’t expect to end up talking about cricket with our driver on the way back or for dinner to taste so different than what I’ve had before (the dal was smoky somehow?).
