The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel and you travel in a private car sized for your group: a six-seater wagon for three to five people, a nine-seater van for six to nine, or a twelve-seater for ten to twelve. The route moves between New Delhi's wide avenues and Old Delhi's dense streets, so you see both the ordered monuments and the working city at once. Parking, tolls, fuel and the guide's time are included. Bottled water and an umbrella come along for the heat or rain.

The first half covers New Delhi's landmarks: India Gate, where 13,300 names of Indian soldiers from the First World War are carved into the stone; the Presidential Palace and Parliament House, passed by from the car; Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a Sikh temple where you can sit in the peaceful courtyard and listen to sacred hymns; and Lotus Temple, built in 1986 with white marble and shaped like an opera house, used as a meditation center by visitors of all faiths. Birla Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi, is substituted if Lotus Temple is closed on Monday. You also pass Agarsen's Stepwell, a 14th-century structure 60 meters deep and 15 meters wide.

Old Delhi comes next: a tuk-tuk ride through Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets, where you walk past shops selling textiles, spices, jewelry and street food; Khari Baoli, the spice market where you can see and smell Indian spices used in cooking; Jama Masjid, the Friday Mosque; and Red Fort, the massive structure built by Shah Jahan between 1639 and 1648 as the main residence for the Mughal emperors. You photograph it from outside. The tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel or a location you choose. If you book the option with lunch, that meal is arranged during the day. A valid photo ID is required at the monuments.
