The Experience

“You have to try the jalebi here — but careful, it’s hot!” grinned Rajiv, our guide, as we squeezed out of the tuk-tuk into Chandni Chowk. I’d barely caught my breath from the ride — horns blaring, rickshaws weaving like dancers — when that first sticky-sweet bite hit me. The market was a riot of colors and smells: turmeric dust in the air, someone shouting for cardamom by the kilo, kids darting between stalls. It’s not just sightseeing; Old Delhi gets under your skin fast.

We started at Jama Masjid, where Rajiv showed us how to wash our hands before entering — I fumbled with the ritual but he didn’t mind. Inside, the marble felt cool even in the heat. There was a moment where everything went quiet except for birds swooping over the domes. Then back outside: tuk-tuk again (I’ll admit I clung on tighter this time), past Red Fort’s red walls and into Khari Baoli spice market. The smell there is something you can almost taste — sharp and earthy at once. My eyes watered a bit but nobody seemed to notice.

I didn’t expect Gurudwara Bangla Sahib to feel so peaceful after all that noise. We left our shoes at the door and joined people sitting cross-legged for langar — simple lentils and bread served by volunteers who smiled without saying much. The hymns echoed softly while sunlight hit the water outside. After that, we cruised past India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan; Rajiv pointed out details about each place but honestly my mind was still half in that kitchen with the clang of pots and the smell of ghee.

The Lotus Temple was closed (Monday), so we stopped at Birla Mandir instead — white marble steps warm from afternoon sun, bells ringing somewhere above us. By drop-off I was tired in a good way, like I’d actually lived inside Delhi for a few hours instead of just looking at it through glass. Still think about that jalebi sometimes.
